Esther Rogers (Jimmy's Mother)
Ever since Red was blamed for the death of his own father, he has felt that “life is a cruel joke, barely worth living”. Esther sees life as precious and beautiful. Her happiness comes more from her faith then from outward circumstances.
One Sunday, when Jimmy’s Mother Esther took her eight children to Sunday school, the Preacher's wife asked: "Mrs. Rogers, how do you keep them so clean?" Her answer: "Soap and water!" That’s Esther, plain-speaking with straight answers. No college degrees, little formal education. A quiet strength and towering faith.

The dramatic contrast between Jimmy’s Mother and Father serves as a metaphor for the choice Jimmy Rogers must face in “Can’t Stop It” the movie. Cascading events in the movie force Jimmy to choose. Will he choose the wrong path and take his own life?

The necessity to choose is the engine that drives this feature length, coming of age/murder mystery.
Esther would never force her beliefs upon others. She has an indomitable spirit and a deeply rooted disdain for injustice.
Esther’s capacity to care for the needs of her large family is helped by small monetary gifts from her loving mother Ava Fisher (who works as a live-in housekeeper for Lawrence Langford).
Young Ava Fisher played piano at a “silent picture” theater owned by Louis B Mayer, one of the pioneers of the American movie industry.
Act one in the movie includes a scene where a rich neighbor’s kid, Petie Farrington is seen pulling his sandy haired face up over the kitchen windowsill and pleading “Mrs. Rogers can I please have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich?”
Esther is struggling to keep her own kids fed and clothed. Will she shoo Petie away? After all his parents are more than capable of feeding their own two kids.

Esther’s great, great grandfather, Reginald Fisher was instrumental in establishing the Underground Railroad. Esther told her children about the secret hiding place in the old Fisher homestead where slaves would hide until the “authorities” went searching elsewhere for the latest run-a-ways.
In the movie “Can’t Stop It”, Esther is concerned about her missing husband, Red Rogers. He has been fired from his job at the Langford Factory. It’s the same factory that burned to the ground a couple days later.
When Red calls to tell her he found work in Nashville, does that mean he’s up to his usual maneuver “Telling Stories”?
Has Red’s High School buddy Harry Hedrick given Red a job in Nashville? Or is Red trying to establish an alibi for the arson of the factory?
